Electric, but analog

de @rtcarsdiary · 20 slide-uri

Electric, but analog - then it clicked - The Polestar 2 is as analog as it gets for an electric car - So I walked through it with a camera, in the order you'd use it - from getting in to getting out.

Electric, but analog - 03 · Windows and mirrors - Four windows, four switches. You find them without looking.

Electric, but analog - 04 · Starting - There's no start button - you are the start button. Sit down and it's on.

Electric, but analog - 05 · The selector - Put it in D and go. P has its own button.

Electric, but analog - 06 · On the move - Indicators on the left stalk, wipers on the right - right where they've always been.

Electric, but analog - 9

Electric, but analog - 07 · Physical, with a click - Steering-wheel buttons, a volume knob, the hazard switch - all physical, all right under your fingers.

Electric, but analog - 08 · The glovebox - It opens by hand, not from a menu.

Electric, but analog - 09 · Ventilation - Classic vents with a metal tab: push it and the air goes where you want.

Electric, but analog - 13

Electric, but analog - 10 · Getting out - A handle you pull. Nothing to explain - not to parents, not to grandparents.

Electric, but analog - Not just my taste - From 2026, Euro NCAP gives points for physical controls. - Indicators, gear selector, hazards, horn, SOS and wipers - physical, or at most two taps deep.

Electric, but analog - Handles, by law - And in China, from 2027, no mechanical release means no type approval.

Electric, but analog - so... - 4 switches for 4 windows, 2 seconds for the wheel, 0 menus for the glovebox. - And zero explaining to your parents how to get in or out of the car.

Electric, but analog - More miles, more notes - to be continued.

Electric, but analog - Analog doesn't mean outdated. It means you know what a thing does before you touch it. - The full long read on the Polestar 2, updated as I go: boysnight.club/en/garage

The last natural six

de @rtcarsdiary · 20 slide-uri

The last natural six - The last natural six - BMW X3 xDrive28i (F25) · N52B30 214,000 to 271,000 km

The last natural six - WHY AN F25 - The before... - Five years with the last naturally aspirated X3 - A straight-six with no turbo, the best eight-speed automatic, and the size of the first X5. - 214,000 km - mid-life, not the end

The last natural six - 01 - The purchase - October 2021: a 2011 US import with 214,000 km - and its full history at my workshop.

The last natural six - the pedal setting it should have left the factory with - 02 · The firmware - From 2010 US software to the latest European. The laggy throttle was a factory flaw - now fixed.

The last natural six - 03 · The M wheel - A heated M wheel - one of BMW's best ever. Plus a spare key from the next generation.

The last natural six - 04 · The big retrofit - Newer iDrive with wireless CarPlay, an M gear shifter, a newer cluster. A 2011 that feels like a 2016.

The last natural six - the 6WA cluster - Real needles over a screen - the right mix of analogue and digital.

The last natural six - ZERO BLUE SMOKE. - 05 · Engine service - All 24 valve stem seals, a new timing chain kit, a new oil pressure valve. No blue smoke since.

The last natural six - pure theatre. worth it. - 06 · The red button - The only mod with no technical reason. Just a better way to start the day.

The last natural six - 07 · The portrait - July 2022, nine months in: retrofits done, engine sorted, still the original beige interior.

The last natural six - the only time - it didn't start - 08 · The starter - September 2023: the only time in four years it wouldn't start. Just the starter motor.

The last natural six - 09 · The small things - Wood trim, black grilles, a newer console and climate panel, a European mirror.

The last natural six - 10 · Thassos - October on a Greek island: ferries, marble quarries, dirt tracks through olive groves.

The last natural six - 4 trips. 0 complaints. - four on board - Four people, all their luggage, hours at the wheel - and you still step out rested.

The last natural six - 40:60 BY DEFAULT. - xDrive - Quarry dust, dirt tracks, black ice back home. All-wheel drive you never notice working.

The last natural six - 11 · The sport interior - August 2024: sport seats with adjustable bolsters, beige to brown. The upgrade you feel most.

The last natural six - 12 · Preventive care - June 2025: Valvetronic, VANOS, plugs, control arms. Nearly every known N52 weak spot, fixed.

The last natural six - 13 · Four years on - 271,000 km, one breakdown, 9.7 l/100 km on long trips - and now the garage's workhorse.

The last natural six - 271,000 km - So... - €10,000 to buy, ~€8,000 to perfect. About a third of what it cost new in Europe. - Zero regrets. - A 3 Series platform, a legendary straight-six, a brilliant gearbox - and nothing that breaks expensively. Not a car you keep for lack of options. One you can't find a reason to sel

The last natural six - More kilometres, more chapters - to be continued.
